Litchfield is working to reduce the use of salt

The Town of Litchfield is working to reduce the potential for contamination of local waterways by minimizing chloride (salt) exposure.

Why is salt reduction important?

As of 2021, 50 waterbodies in New Hampshire are polluted with chloride due to road salt application. In several watersheds analyzed in the southern I-93 corridor, more than 50% of the salt load comes from private roads and parking lots.

What can you do?

  • Cover salt piles and place them on an impervious pad.
  • Limit the amount of salt applied to parking lots and driveways.
  • Take consideration of where you dispose of your snow.
  • Do not dispose of snow in waterbodies.
