Halloween 2020
After great thought and consideration, we at the Litchfield Police Department firmly believe it is in the best interest of the community to proceed with Halloween. This year’s Halloween celebration will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020, from 6pm until 8pm. That being said, we also need to ensure the residents of Litchfield are taking the necessary steps to keep our children and families safe from COVID-19.
This years’ Halloween will be celebrated with some added recommendations to help make our community safer. We strongly urge parents to wear a mask or face covering and engage in social distancing while escorting their children from home to home. This means keeping your children together and avoiding other groups or people if at all possible. Additionally, we would recommend the wearing of masks for all with but one exception. Children wearing a mask as part of their costume, should not wear an additional mask. With children running around, we fear the additional mask could hinder their breathing.
When your children are approaching a home, we recommend that only one child approach the home at a time, to help ensure social distancing. At the conclusion of your candy collecting, there are two methods to sanitize your children’s candy. Using hand sanitizer on the outer packaging of candy is an acceptable method of ensuring the candy sanitized. Another method would be to leave the candy for a seventy-two (72) hour period in a garage or other area away from the children. These added measures will help to make certain the candy is free from COVID-19.
For those residents who will be handing out candy, we have a couple recommendations for you folks as well. If you choose to distribute candy, we ask that you keep a light on outside your home to notify trick or treaters that you’re handing out candy. If you choose not to hand out candy we ask you turn your lights off for the two hour period. When distributing candy, we ask that residents place prepackaged bags of candy on a table in their driveway or yard. Please do not personally hand out candy to the trick or treaters, and please do not hand out personally made edible items. We ask that you maintain social distancing while handing out candy this Halloween as well as wearing a mask and using hand sanitizer frequently.
Everyone please do your part to ensure the safety of our community. We hope everyone has a safe and spooktacular halloween this year. I know our Officers will be out and about on October 31st hoping to see some super spooky costumes!!!!!
