Burglary Investigation breakthrough

On September 16, 2013 the Litchfield Police Department conducted an undercover surveillance of an area in Litchfield that has been a “hot spot” for burglaries over the past couple of weeks. The residents of Litchfield have been victimized in the north end of Litchfield with approximately 11 burglaries.
The Litchfield Police Department initiated a CODE RED notification on September 5, 2013 to residents alerting them of the burglary problem. The residents responded with numerous tips to the Police Department. The CODE RED service was initiated this year by the Town of Litchfield as a mass notification system. The system notified 2,800 residents almost immediately via telephone or text message. Numerous calls relating to suspicious persons and vehicles were called in over the next couple of weeks allowing officers to identify potential suspects.
Undercover surveillance identified two suspects linked to possibly 9 burglaries. A subsequent search warrant was secured for a residence in Litchfield and potential stolen items were recovered. A search of several area pawn shops was conducted and several articles of stolen jewelry have been recovered. This investigation is ongoing and has the potential to clear several more burglaries in the future.
The Litchfield Police Department is in the process of compiling data for other local communities experiencing this same unusual increase in home burglaries.
