The New Hampshire Division of Public Health Services (NH DPHS) has recently identified a probable human case of neuroinvasive West Nile Virus (WNV) in an adult who resides in Chesterfield, NH. The individual was hospitalized and has fully recovered. Confirmatory testing is underway.
This year WNV has been detected in 9 mosquito batches. Additional trapping and testing of mosquitoes is ongoing in several areas of the state and mosquito batches have also tested positive this year in: Kensington, Nashua, Stratham, Pelham, Sandown, and New Castle. Prior to this case, the last human WNV case in NH was reported and confirmed in August 2012. Nationally, as of September 3, 2013, a total of 497 human WNV cases have been reported by 36 states (49% neuroinvasive disease; 20 deaths).
